Acute diarrhea spreads across southern provinces
------------------------------------------------
An acute diarrhea epidemic is spreading far and wide in southern provinces, including Cau Mau, An Giang, Ben Tre and Can Tho City, according to the Department of Preventive Health and the Environment [Ministry of Health].

Nguyen Van Binh, vice director of the department, says that about 70 percent of the contracted cases show minor symptoms or none of the symptoms of the disease. He said it is difficult to control the number of newly infected cases, as most of them are not hospitalized for clinical examinations. Binh also warns that _Vibrio cholerae_ bacterium can be detected in ice water, canals and even dog meat.

The acute diarrhea epidemic has shown signs of waning in the northern region with no new cases reported over the past weeks.

[According to the above newswire, there is now an increase in reported cases of "acute diarrhea" in the southern provinces of Cau Mau, An Giang, Ben Tre and in Can Tho City, although the exact numbers of cases are not provided in the newswire. There is also mention of waning activity in the northern provinces, where there had been reports of increases of "acute diarrhea" and cholera in Hanoi in June and early July 2010 (see prior PRO/MBDS postings, Cholera - Viet Nam (20): RFI 20100709.2302, Cholera - Viet Nam (19) 20100708.2273, and Cholera - Viet Nam (18): 20100704.2221).

PRO/MBDS would appreciate further information from knowledgeable sources regarding the updated reported numbers of acute diarrhea and cholera cases in Viet Nam.
